Specialty and Sweepstakes Results

Puppy Sweepstakes Judge: Suzanne Morrison Forsyth

I would like to thank the Willamette Valley Saluki Club for inviting me to judge sweepstakes at its 2006 annual specialty. This speciality is one I have enjoyed several times as an exhibitor. I was equally delighted to participate as one of its judges. The lovely show site and cool weather were ideal conditions and the wooded ring area is always a wonderful background for the Salukis.

I would also like to thank my ring steward for his efficient handling of the ring details and keeping things moving on such a brisk morning. And finally, thank you to the owners and exhibitors who shared their beautiful entries with me.

I was looking for an elegant and moderate Saluki of pleasing type with balanced proportions, light and effortless gait, and the promise of a functional hound. The overall quality of the entry was excellent. I was pleasantly surprised to see that most Salukis, youngsters and veterans alike, possessed clean teeth, well kept nails, and were presented in acceptable weights and conditioning. Temperaments were a factor in a couple of entrants. Most Salukis were sound. The most common faults were front assemblies placed too far foreword and straightness in shoulder and upper arm.

My comments below are my observations on the day as the entrants were presented to me.

Puppy Dogs 6 mos. and under 9 mos. (1)
1st HOUN’ HOLLOW HALATION
Owners: James & Lesley Thomson & Romane Switch.
Grizzle puppy whose exuberance got the best of him and was difficult to evaluate. More weight and maturity will smoothen out his topline.

Junior Dogs 12 mos. and under 18 mos. (1)
1st ULURU TAGNIK’ZUR PHAROAH’S SUN
Owner: Lori Olson.
A gold dog of considerable substance with nice feathering and eye shape. I regret that his fearfulness was a major factor in his ability to relax and be evaluated.

Junior Dogs 18 mos. and under 24 mos. (2)
This class had two entrants of excellent quality, lovely temperaments and medium-build males, a size I really like.
1st SUNDARA’S FAITHFUL RAVEN
Owners: Michelle, Michael-Paul & Reily Haag.
A very nicely balanced, masculine grizzle puppy with pleasing expression, good topline, bone, and lovely side movement. Very nice neck into shoulders, deep brisket and underline. What most impressed me about this dog was his ability to use everything he had while in motion and he improved with each turn around the ring while at a moderate speed. I was pleased to award him Best Puppy in Sweepstakes.
2nd SUNDARA’S HOWLING WOLF
Owners: Tracey & John Skupny.
Another very nice grizzle puppy. I liked his balance and size yet he did not use himself as freely and completely on the move as No. 1.

Puppy Bitches 9 mos. and under 2 mos. (2)
1st UZIDUZIT SECOND AMENDMENT
Owners: Laruen Chen & Vicky L. Clarke.
A feminine, petite black-fringed red grizzle bitch of deep quality. Nice width through the front and side movement. A lovely team.
2nd UZIDUZIT TULA-RU TO KAREV
Owners: Melissa Forbes & Vicky Clarke.
A less mature gold bitch with a little more height and more narrow throughout than #1. Nicely presented.

Junior Bitches 12 mos. and under 18 mos. (2)
1st KYZYL KUM INDIA
Owners: Wendy & Brian Duggan.
Lovely pale grizzle bitch with more substance and maturity than #2. I liked her balance, wonderful front fill and moderate angulation at both ends. I was pleased to award her Best of Opposite Sex Puppy in Sweepstakes.
2nd SNOWYNDE VERITABLE QUANDRY
Owners: Bonnie A. & Lois Boucher.
Smooth grizzle bitch, more feminine to my eye than #1 with a pretty head and expression, hocks low to the ground, effortless side movement with wonderful carriage. Not quite as sure of herself at this age as #1. Beautifully presented.

Junior Bitches 18 mos. and under 24 mos. (1)
1st AL SAYAD ACE ADITI
Owners: Jan Priddy & Fiona Bennett.
Black-fringed fawn with lovely face and sweet temperament. I found her a bit narrow all throughout, especially through the pelvis. At this time she lacks soundness of front movement yet was more cleanly moving in the rear.

Veteran Sweepstakes Judge: Suzanne Morrison Forsyth

I found a wonderful cross-section of lovely types in these veterans and, despite the small entry, the quality was deep. Obesity in older Salukis is a concern and their owners should be proud for keeping them in such good condition. I felt privileged to judge these dogs, all beautiful examples of the breed.

Junior Veteran Dog 7 years and under 10 years (2)
1st CH. ZANSKAR SUMMER SQUALL, JC
Owners: Anne Mayea & Cynthia Bethke.
Lovely black fringed red male with a most exotic expression and eye. Exquisite head and type, well balanced and moderate. I was pleased to award him Best of Opposite Sex in Veteran Sweepstakes.
2nd CH. ASPEN’S WIZARD, JC
Owners: Marie & Don Anti & C. Gregory.
Handsome and very masculine black and tan male with more substance and bone than No. 1.

Junior Veteran Bitch 7 years and under 10 years (1)
1st CH. KYZYL KUM PHAEDRA
Owners: Bill & Christine Lewis.
A beautiful tri-colored smooth bitch. What most impressed me was how smooth and flowing she was from neck into shoulder and topline, her well-sprung ribs and width of pelvis. Shown in lovely condition, this bitch showed a typical light and effortless side movement. I was pleased to award her Best in Veteran Sweepstakes.

Senior Veteran Bitch 10 years and over (1)
1st CH. TIARC TAVANAI PIPPI LONG SOX

Lovely petite red bitch with the most haunting sweet expression and elegant type. A credit to her dam, one of my sentimental favorites from many years ago.

Conformation Classes Judge: Patrick Garcia, Jr.

I wish to thank the Willamette Valley Saluki Club for the opportunity to Judge their Specialty. It was indeed an honor. The weather was beautiful and did not stress the dogs. For the most part the quality of entries was good.

Personally, when writing a critique, I look for the good points about a dog, as I also do in judging. I place a lot of emphasis on movement because it is a test to the dog's conformation. I evaluated dogs with good toplines, beautiful heads, nice fronts with good shoulder layback and strong rears with good second thigh. A good example was my winners dog, although just a puppy presented type, balance and function. For a dog so young he showed presence and made me smile at his joyous disposition. I evaluated each dog on its merits and chose placements on those merits. All had good bites and underjaw.

Exhibitors as well as spectators indicated to me, after judging was complete, that they believed I had a difficult task of selection due to so many good dogs. They were right. But by reviewing AKC standards before judging it made my job achievable and fun. Also having so many quality dogs was a compliment that I will never forget. To each exhibitor, you should be proud of your Salukis because they were fine examples of the breed and in my opinion all gave 110% effort.

In addition to thanking the President and members of the WVSC, I want to especially thank the Show Chairman for providing my transportation and wonderful hospitality. And, thank you to my ring stewart for his help in managing my ring.

Sincerely,
Patrick Garcia, Jr.
