Specialty and Sweepstakes Results

Puppy Sweepstakes Judge: Dianne Kroll

I very much enjoyed judging the WVSC Sweepstakes classes; I was rather impressed with the overall quality of the entry. In general, I was pleased to see good short loins and long legs, as well as reasonable movement coming and going (which is all one asks of a sighthound).Well-placed dark eyes and good expression were the rule; backskulls were generally correct, though some narrow muzzles strayed from the classic wedge-shaped head.

The 9-12 puppy dog opened the competition at a high level of quality. Lovely head with 'far-seeing' expression; strong outline and back quarters, easy movement. The 12-18 dog was a big boy, with a full deep chest and arched loin; he so epitomized the desired powerful yet light and graceful movement that I simply had to give him Best in Sweeps.

Puppy bitches 6-9 months were obviously littermates. Both had nice sloping shoulders, yet need some maturity to balance their necks into their front end assembly. #21 (GAZELLA NARUBA GOLDEN PRINCESS) showed slightly better balance, and a more flexible loin, and so placed above #22 (GAZELLA NARUBA PACIFIC PRINCESS). The 9-12 puppy bitch had a nice typey outline and underline, and was well-balanced front and rear. The 12-18 bitch class was quite high in quality. My third place #12 (Z’BEE’S YEMYEMWAH OF WALKIRK) had good chest and nicely arched loin, but needs balance on the move. Second place #29 (SALISH’ LEGACY BEY) was a compact well-balanced bitch with excellent front-end assembly and classic head. #28 (CH. SIRIANNI TIARC NYALA SM) and my Best of Opposite was also typey and sound, exhibiting strength, elegance and grace when moving.

The veterans classes were a treat, not just for sentiments sake, but as a demonstration that quality lasts! All 3 entries were strong and still sound, the elder bitch #22 (CH. SALISH MY GIRL)in particular retaining a strong loin and rear. Bitch #23 (CH. TIARC TAVANAI PIPPI LONG SOX) exhibited such classic type and balance that she was an easy pick for Best in Veterans Sweeps.

Kandi began her show career as BOW with a 5-pt major from the 6-9 puppy class at Sammamish Kennel Club’s PSSC trophy supported entry. She finished 2 years later at the same Trophy supported show with another 5-pt major and BOW from the Bred-by Exhibitor class. Kandi was always breeder/owner handled.

Nyala has been a charmer since day one. At her first show weekend (PSSC Specialty) she turned heads. The next weekend out she took Best of Breed over her father – a sign of what was to come. She went to the SCGSF Specialty at 7 months of age and as always was shown in the Bred By Exhibitor Class where she held her own against the older girls. At the Delle Valle follow up show on the last day she was RWB – missing the major by a whisker. She finished at 11 months of age and is a third generation AKC Bred By Exhibitor Medallion winner. We are very proud of this little imp.

Conformation Classes Judge: Dr. James Sillers

“It was a very enjoyable experience judging the Willamette Valley Saluki Club specialty. Everyone was kind, gracious and pleasant towards me, during and following my judging. Other exhibitors could take lessons from you.

The Saluki breed appears to be in good hands when one evaluates the overall quality of this entry. In my opinion, I saw very few oversized individuals, very few over angulated in the rear, the down and back was excellent to adequate on most of the individuals and the same could be said for the side movement. Some individuals did have more drive in their rear, however.

My winner’s bitch, Salish’ Legacy Bey, was a beautiful individual with a classic Saluki head. She carried the muscling that I was looking for and had a noticeable drive in her rear. If I were to change anything in this bitch it would be a darker eye. Once I judged her, I felt I might have found my Best of Breed winner.

Reserve winner’s bitch, Gazella Naruba Golden Princess, was a puppy in open class. She was square, balanced, had great pigment and a very dark eye. I liked her movement when she wasn’t acting like a puppy.

My winner’s dog, Conan of Aldecar, was a square individual that was balanced and had a pleasing head and correct ear carriage. I would have liked a little more return of upper are but was pleased the he converged when moving away and toward you.

My best Veteran, Ch. Salish My Girl, was another outstanding individual. I again was impressed with her muscling, balance and movement. When I examined her, I felt that I might be looking at my Best of Breed winner.

When I pulled the three individuals out, Ch. Shadaglen Thunder Mtn Fidler, Salish’ Legacy Bey & Salish My Girl, that eventually became BOB, BOW and BOS, I still had not made up my mind who was going to be BOB. My final decision was based on their final movement. My bitches had tired from being in the heat. Their movement was correct as they never put a foot down improperly. However, my BOB winner moved as if he was flowing in the wind.

I found much variation in head style and ear set overall. Looking for the dogs expression, I was surprised how many exhibitors destroyed their dog’s ear carriage by sliding their hand over the back of the skull and used their thumb and first finger to push the ears lower on the head.

Other than the heads, the areas that one needs to watch carefully are the areas all breeders need to watch carefully as long as we breed dogs. 1. length and return of upper arm 2. length of body thru the ribs not the loin, 3. having the front legs placed under the body instead of too far forward.
