Conformation Classes Judge: Brian Duggan

My warm thanks to the Willamette Valley Saluki Club for inviting me to judge their 2008 Specialty. It was a great honor and privilege to be able to evaluate your Salukis. The weather and grounds were superb – with plenty of cool shade for the comfort of dogs and people. I had a wonderful time and hope that everyone enjoyed the day as well.

I was looking for the signature elements of our breed as called for in the standard: moderation, balance, top-line, and the seamless combination of elegance and strength. Color or coat type have no effect on conformation or movement and did not influence my judgment. Sound, effortless movement is most important as a Saluki could not successfully bring down game without it.

The dogs were in good condition and well presented. A few tails verged on being too short (just barely touching the hock) and breeders should be looking out for this. A few overly shy youngsters were difficult to examine but I tried to make their experience in the ring a good one.

His head was elegant but could be a little more masculine, and I would like to see a bit more chest fill – otherwise he is a very good package. This dog pushed hard for WD but ultimately his front movement did not hold up in the Winner’s competition.

A lovely, light red (11.5 years old) who was very sound and graceful in her movement and in great condition for her age. Shoulders were a bit straight (but still good) and her rear angulation correctly moderate. She was a bit high in the rear, but had a lovely long tail. She gaited effortlessly moved around the ring with panache and style. It was a tough choice between her and #43 for Best Veteran.

A lovely red bitch with dark points. Feminine, yet very businesslike in her attitude, she was more square and compact in the body than the BOB dog, but still correct within the standard. She had proper angulation, top-line, and balance. Her attitude was great and her condition excellent. With easy, efficient movement, she was pleasure to watch. Another outstanding example of our breed, and on a different day I might have switched these two.
