Specialty and Sweepstakes Results
Puppy Sweepstakes Judge: Mr. Mark Webster
I was very pleased with the overall entry; the condition of all the dogs exhibited was excellent. All the dogs when settled showed good movement when allowed to find their own pace. All of the entrants moved better when the leashes were relaxed and allowed move as they would in the field.
Puppies should be allowed to play and enjoy the experience. As a judge I do not fault dogs for having fun and being playful. If they are subdued and regimented at this age they loose the glamour and free spirit that is unique to Salukis. One thing I love about the breed is the natural easy flowing gait. I remember the feeling I used to get when the dog at the end of the leash did not need me on the other end. They all have that potential given the basics.
The bitches in this age range display the glamour and coquettishness whereas the males are at an unfortunate time in the growth pattern being both gangly and lacking the flair of the females. I was impressed with the bitch entry over the males for this reason. Both smooth and feathered were good representatives of the breed. The smoothes have improved immensely over the years and a pleasure to see a good number of them.
It is very interesting to see the distinct types still remain in the breed and not become a generic collection of dogs that have no recognizable heraldry. As breeders you should all be proud that you have not breed “cookie cutter” Salukis that all look alike.
Having spent many years working with breeders and as a handler I have had the pleasure to see and show many different Salukis of different types from various kennels. All of my class placements I would not hesitate to exhibit if I had the opportunity and was still active in competition.
I apologize that I did not record my impressions of the individual class placements but I was so involved in judging and I would rather spend the allotted time giving all the entrants’ time to show their best. I forgot all about doing it. My apologies to you all and thank you for entering such quality animals under me.

Not an easy choice for first.

I had many fine examples of the breed before me in the Best of Breed ring. The challenge of making the choice of the best Saluki on this day was thrilling and on another day the results could have been very different. On this day my Best of Breed went to the exquisite Winners Bitch, NEONAURA ARTEMIS AZHARAANI. I could not resist her. Best of Opposite went to the Winners Dog, SIRIANNI RED OCTOBER. These are two Salukis that I wish I could say that I had bred. They are two that I could have in my home and be satisfied to just look at them like pieces of artwork.
I had two Award of Merit rosettes to distribute and wish I had more. They went to two other exceptional Salukis: CH. SALISH’ LEGACY BEY - a beautiful black bitch that could have easily be my Best of Breed any other day. She has a lovely outline and moves beautifully. DC JAMORA BAHIA TUSCANY, SC – my wonderful veteran dog who held up throughout the long day.
My overall general impression: This was a wonderful entry with diverse styles and quality represented. I saw a few light eyes where I would have preferred a darker eye. I saw a few round eyes where I wish were more oval in shape. I saw wonderful temperaments and when puppies came in for Best Puppy it made me think that if these represent the future of the breed, the breed is in very good shape. I saw nice feet and nice headpieces with good ear set.
Probably, the one thing that I would like to correct on a number of dogs, and represents problems in a number of sighthound breeds, is lack of forechest or fill between the front legs. It may be just an overall narrowness of the dog itself. Although it is not addressed in the standard, it is important to a coursing dog that we want to be able to do what they were bred to do.
